What to expect at the Academy of Music, Philadelphia

The dress code at a typical Academy of Music event is informal. Although formal attire is usually optional, some people show up well-dressed to certain events. In general, doors open around one hour prior to the start of an event. The venue recommends that guests arrive as early as possible, allowing time to pass through security, make any purchases, and find assigned seats.

Among the resident companies, Philadelphia Ballet (formerly known as Pennsylvania Ballet) appears several times per year in captivating productions.

Acoustics and decor

The relatively plain exterior allowed the architects to concentrate on a lavish interior. Ornate columns prop up the balconies, while the stunning crystal chandelier dominates the attention of the entire theater. The ceiling features intricate paintings that complement the recessed tiered balconies to give an authentic and classical theater feel.

Conductors and singers have varied opinions on the quality of the theater’s sound. Fritz Reiner commented that the Academy’s sound was like that of an Italian opera house, with a “dry” quality coming from the open spaces above the stage and built-in sound absorption. Of course, many modern theater events use electrical amplification, although opera, ballet, and classical events still rely on natural acoustics.
