Back To The Future – Theatrical Production at Academy of Music

Back To The Future The Musical, an adaptation that was much-awaited, was thought of way back two decades ago, when the wife of one of the creators, Robert Zemeckis, was curious about the concept of expanding on the legacy of the original film. The musical was set to open in 2015, as a reference to the follow-up film to Back To The Future (which was also written by the same creators), yet it was postponed indefinitely and eventually premiered at the Manchester Opera House, then subsequently moved to London’s Adelphi Theater after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The musical, besides a few slight changes, still features the sci-fi journey of Marty McFly as he discovers transtemporal travel to the year 1955, 30 years prior to the story’s setting. However, because of the changeability of live adaptations, the musical was able to build on the previous film's content that immensely leveled up the musical. Both visually and audially, the vibrant show has unforgettable implementation. The musical utilizes the most advanced equipment possible in West End and creates a graphic viewing, with the set design, lighting design, sound design, and video animations all blending with each other quite well. The DeLorean as an example, (which is the time-traveling car that is central to the plot) the moment the car is revealed in the first act, is done so perfectly that viewers have enthused over.

When it comes to video design, Back To The Future The Musical also definitely is on another level. Video designer Finn Ross utilizes 3D editing quite well that every single background video fits as a complementary component that blends with the live sets seamlessly. Ross even shares that in each video edit “My goal was to make it lifelike. Sometimes we might take inspiration from tangible textures, but the producers hoped to attain this relative vivid reimagining to match the amount of zest the play exists on.”

This upcoming November’s run of the Back To The Future stage adaptation will be hosted in Academy Of Music in Philadelphia, on Saturday 29th November 2025.
