The Notebook Musical

PLOT

The story begins with Noah Calhoun who’s reading a story to his wife Allie. She’s suffering from Alzheimer’s so she has trouble remembering her husband, her famly, and the life she lived. Noah reads her a love story, based on their life, from a notebook. Allie comes from a wealthy family while Noah is a working class boy. They met during Allie’s summer break when she arrived in town with her friends. Coming from different social classes, this pairing was not the most ideal. But the two characters fall in love but things take a turn when a grown up Allie is forced to choose between living a life of comfort or choosing the working class man, whom she loved dearly since she was a teen.

So the question is, how did The Notebook fare with its stage adaptation? In BroadwayWord, the reviewer wrote, “the stage version of The Notebook is a great medium for this story and the touring production is equipped with not only an incomparable cast, but crew as well.” The review praised the musical for delivering an outstanding version of the original 2024 Broadway epic, “The Notebook makes it rain!”

Over at New York Theater blog, the musical was praised for being “uniformly well-cast, with several memorable performances.” The review went on to describe its awe for the iconic rain scene, where Noah and Allie kissed while getting drenched, “Has there ever been more romantic rain on Broadway?”

Meanwhile, In Good Taste Denver’s reviewer has never read the novel but the writer was all praises, “The very last scene deserves a line all to itself in this review – mid-way through the song, the orchestra drops out and it’s just a cappella. The sound is so rich, the harmonies so perfect and the sound so big,  I found myself holding my breath, taking it all in. Fabulous!” Lastly, the New York Theatre Guide called this production “a trip down memory lane.” The writer expounded how the musical had audiences reminiscing about past selves, “And there we are in the audience, also reflecting, seeing if these characters remind us of the ones we projected ourselves onto (or whose aggressive sentimentality we dismissed) 20 years ago.”
